Defensive Controls for College Football 27
Defense received the biggest control overhaul in College Football 27. EA responded to years of community feedback asking for more pre-snap tools, smarter coverage answers, and faster access to leverage adjustments by rebuilding the entire defensive menu structure. Last year's scheme centered on L2/LT strafe and L1/LB Defensive Assist; this year, holding L2/LT opens a Global Coverage hub, L1/LB triggers Custom Adjustment macros, R1/RB handles Coverage Shells and QB Contain, and the right stick flicks separately adjust defensive linemen and linebackers. Content creator Civ (@MisterCiv) and outlets like Athlon Sports documented the full layout ahead of launch. This guide explains every new defensive control and how the pieces fit together.

What Changed from College Football 26
College Football 26 assigned L2/LT to strafe and L1/LB to Defensive Assist, with D-pad directions contextually controlling DL and LB adjustments. Over time, the layout became difficult to navigate under pressure—EA's own analogy compared it to "shoving everything into open spaces" rather than organizing it.
College Football 27 keeps post-snap controls largely intact (player switching, movement, pursuit angles) but reassigns nearly every pre-snap defensive menu. The biggest additions are dedicated buttons for Coverage Shells, Global Coverage Adjustments, Bluff PlayArt, and Custom Adjustment macros, while DL and LB tweaks move to right stick flicks.
Offensive players should note the parallel changes too—protection controls unified under L2/LT mirror the defensive hub design. Full platform layouts: PS5 · Xbox · PC.
Global Coverage Hub (L2 / LT)
Hold L2 (PS5) or LT (Xbox) to open the Global Coverage Adjustment hub—the centerpiece of the defensive overhaul. From one overlay:
- Press or back off coverage on corners and safeties
- Set inside or outside leverage
- Pass commit inside or outside
- Adjust Smart Zone strategy: Aggressive, Balanced, Conservative, Ultra Aggressive, Ultra Conservative, Look For Work, Plaster, Red Zone Awareness, Focus
- Apply Deep Zone Focus to specific receivers
- Clear Deep Zone Focus
- Select a receiver icon and press Square/X to double-team
- Match any defender onto any receiver (carried forward from prior years, now inside the hub)
Receiver icons appear while holding L2/LT so you target specific players without menu diving. Smart Zones now include Plaster logic (Conservative/Aggressive attachment when QBs scramble), Roll Coverage shading (Fastest, Field, Boundary, WR1-WR3, TE1-TE2), and match coverage checks for stacks, bunches, and trips.
Custom Adjustments, Shells & PlayArt
Three additional buttons handle macro-level and disguise tools:
- L1 / LB (tap): Custom Adjustments — apply saved defensive packages instantly. Build up to 20, bring 10 active per game. Presets include QB Scramble, Play Short Routes, No Deep Passes, and Defend Screen Pass. Full guide: Custom Adjustments.
- R1 / RB: Coverage Shells and QB Contain — show and commit to coverage shells, manage contain responsibilities against mobile QBs
- R2 / RT: Show PlayArt / Bluff PlayArt — display or fake play art to disguise intentions pre-snap
- Triangle / Y: Individual Adjustments — per-player tweaks for specific matchups
Triangle/Y handles the granular player-level changes that the Global Coverage hub does not cover—useful for single-receiver battles and assignment overrides on critical downs.
DL & LB Adjustments via Right Stick
Defensive line and linebacker pre-snap adjustments now use right stick flicks instead of D-pad inputs:
- Right Stick Left: Defensive line adjustments — pinch, spread, shift gaps, adjust alignment
- Right Stick Right: Linebacker adjustments — depth, width, blitz/contain assignments
This separation mirrors real coordinator communication—front adjustments and second-level adjustments are distinct calls. Combined with the Global Coverage hub handling secondary leverage, you can build complete pre-snap looks without touching the D-pad, which now serves camera (Up/Down), Coach Vision (Left), and Dynamic Subs (Right).
Tackle Stick & Post-Snap Defense
Post-snap defensive controls add the Tackle Stick on the right stick—you never leave the stick to tackle:
- Up: Hit Stick
- Down: Cut Stick
- Left: Lunge Tackle
- Right: Wrap Tackle
Arm tackle wrap coverage improved against overpursuit angles. High hit-power defenders drive smaller ballcarriers backward more consistently. In-air catch tackle interactions received visual fixes reducing unnatural pop-ups.
Defensive AI also uses the new coverage tools—Smart Zones, Plaster, Roll Coverage, and match checks apply to CPU defenders, not just user-controlled players. Expect smarter zone drops and more authentic man coverage answers against bunch and stack formations.
Practical Defensive Game Plan
The new controls reward preparation over button mashing:
- Before the game: Set 10 active Custom Adjustments for your opponent's top concepts in Create and Share
- Pre-snap: Apply a Custom Adjustment macro for the down-and-distance situation, then use L2/LT hub for snap-specific leverage tweaks
- Critical downs: R1/RB for shell commitment, Triangle/Y for individual matchup overrides, R2/RT to bluff or confirm coverage intent
- Scramble drill: Plaster settings in the Global Coverage hub plus the QB Scramble Custom Adjustment preset
- Red zone: Smart Zone Red Zone Awareness and Roll Coverage shading toward pass strength
Do not adjust everything every snap—the community's biggest mistake is over-managing pre-snap. Identify the problem (mobile QB, mesh concept, deep shots), apply the right tool once, get set, and play football.
