PS5 Controls for College Football 27

College Football 27 overhauls pre-play controls on PlayStation 5, reorganizing years of layered menus into faster, context-driven hubs. The D-pad no longer doubles as a defensive adjustment shortcut, L1 becomes your Custom Adjustment trigger, and L2 opens the Global Coverage hub where press, leverage, Smart Zones, and receiver matchups live in one place. Offensive protection adjustments unify under L2 as well. Whether you are coming from College Football 26 or crossing over from Madden NFL 27, expect muscle memory changes—but EA's design goal is fewer button presses per adjustment, not fewer options. This page maps every confirmed PS5 control for the new system.

D-Pad Reorganization

EA redesigned D-pad functions in College Football 27 after feedback that last year's layout mixed unrelated tools. The new mapping is consistent across offense and defense:

  • D-Pad Up / Down: Toggle camera angles
  • D-Pad Left: Open Coach Vision HUD — read defensive shells, offensive tendencies, and situational info before the snap
  • D-Pad Right: Open Dynamic Subs — swap personnel packages without pausing

Defensive line and linebacker pre-snap tweaks that previously lived on D-pad left/right now use the right stick (left flick for DL, right flick for LBs). This frees the D-pad for camera and coaching tools that apply on both sides of the ball. For the full defensive reassignment, see our defensive controls guide.

L1 — Custom Adjustments Button

L1 is the dedicated Custom Adjustment button on PS5 for both offense and defense. Tap L1 at the line of scrimmage to open your active adjustment menu and apply a saved package in one or two presses—replacing 15–20 manual inputs from previous years.

Before kickoff, build packages in Create and Share → Custom Adjustments. You can save up to 20 offensive and 20 defensive packages but only bring 10 active per side into each game. Preset macros like "QB Scramble," "Play Short Routes," "Go Vertical," and "Mesh" ship ready to use even if you never build custom setups.

At the play call screen, hold the play button to see Custom Adjustments above stunts and twists. Full creation workflow details live on our Custom Adjustments page.

L2 — Global Coverage Hub (Defense) & Protection (Offense)

On defense, hold L2 to open the Global Coverage Adjustment hub. From this single overlay you can:

  • Press or back off cornerbacks and safeties
  • Set inside or outside leverage
  • Pass commit inside or outside
  • Adjust Smart Zone strategy (Aggressive, Balanced, Conservative, Ultra Aggressive, Ultra Conservative, Look For Work, Plaster, Red Zone Awareness, Focus)
  • Apply or clear Deep Zone Focus on specific receivers
  • Double-team a receiver (select receiver icon, press Square)
  • Match any defender onto any receiver

Receiver icons appear while holding L2 so adjustments target specific players without menu diving. On offense, L2 unifies major pass protection controls for faster pre-snap protection tweaks.

Additional PS5 Pre-Play Controls

Beyond L1 and L2, these confirmed inputs round out the PS5 pre-play layout (per EA's gameplay deep dive and community breakdowns):

  • R1: Coverage Shells / QB Contain
  • R2: Show PlayArt / Bluff PlayArt
  • Triangle: Individual Adjustments (hot routes on offense, per-player defensive tweaks)
  • Square: Audible — change the play at the line
  • Right Stick Left: Defensive line adjustments
  • Right Stick Right: Linebacker adjustments
  • Left Stick: Motion player before the snap

Player movement, switching defenders, and directional player switching remain unchanged from College Football 26. The overhaul targets pre-snap coaching tools, not post-snap on-field controls.

Tackle Stick & Post-Snap Defense

The new Tackle Stick maps tackle types to right stick directions so you never leave the stick to make a tackle:

  • Right Stick Up: Hit Stick
  • Right Stick Down: Cut Stick
  • Right Stick Left: Lunge Tackle
  • Right Stick Right: Wrap Tackle

Arm tackle wrap coverage, drive-through hits, and in-air catch tackle interactions received visual and physics improvements. Timing Based Catching adds a skill layer at the catch point—press and hold the catch type button after the throw, release in the green window before the ball arrives.

Xbox players use the same layout with LB/LT equivalents—see our Xbox controls page for the parallel mapping.

FAQ

What happened to L2 strafe on defense in CFB 27?
L2 no longer functions as a strafe trigger for pre-play menus. Holding L2 now opens the Global Coverage Adjustment hub. On-field strafing and player movement controls remain on the left stick and other unchanged inputs.
How do I apply Custom Adjustments on PS5?
Tap L1 at the line of scrimmage to open your active Custom Adjustments menu, then select the package. Build and manage packages in Create and Share → Custom Adjustments before the game.
Can I stack multiple adjustments in one snap?
No. After applying an adjustment, your players must get set at the line before another adjustment can be applied. You cannot endlessly stack tweaks while players are still moving.
Are Custom Adjustments affected by Home Field Advantage?
No. EA confirms Custom Adjustments are not impacted by Home Field Advantage, unlike some audible and communication mechanics that simulate hostile crowd noise.
Do PS5 controls match Madden NFL 27?
Yes. EA built both games on a shared football foundation with the same pre-play control reorganization. L1/LB for Custom Adjustments and L2/LT for Global Coverage and protection apply in both titles.
